Collection consists primarily of correspondence, bills, acquisition records, publications by and about the Library, information about Library holdings, and photographs. Information on policies, procedures, daily operations, staff activities and special acquisitions of the Library is included, as well as information concerning State Librarians. Of particular interest may be the correspondence between State Librarian Caleb Tillinghast and Melvil Dewey and C.A. Cutter, as well as between he and other notable persons, such as Booker T. Washington (f. 723). Correspondence of the Massachusetts Board of Education and the Massachusetts Free Public Library Commission is also included. Also of note: bills and receipts concerning the delivery of Audubon's Birds of America; documentation of the Vattemare collection; and letters dealing with the acquisition of law materials from foreign countries.
